The 2011 Retriever Championship was held at Nevill Holt Estate by kind permission of Mr David Ross. Head Keeper & Steward of the Beat Jim Chattaway & his team did an excellent job, resulting in a memorable Championship. Over the three days the weather was very cold, at times windy, a small icy shower late morning on the third day.
Forty four handlers and their dogs started the first day under the watchful eyes of judges Roger Philips, Billy Steel, Jayne Coley and Alan Rountree. Scent was a worrying factor, this was highlighted when eight dogs were eye wiped by judges - four on a partridge and a further four on a rabbit. Twenty seven dogs were called for the second day; this was reduced to sixteen for the third day.
The final day’s trialling was at the same place as the first day, the first round consisting of two retrieves on variable ground. Of the sixteen dogs, nine dogs were required to sit at the final drive.
